The 2026 Assam assembly election delivered a decisive mandate for the BJP, which won 102 of the state’s 126 seats to secure a third consecutive term in power. The result ensured Himanta Biswa Sarma’s return as chief minister and extended the BJP’s dominance in one of its most important northeastern strongholds. The Congress-led Asom Sonmilito Morcha suffered a major setback, finishing with just 21 seats, while Congress itself was reduced to 19. One of the biggest upsets came in Jorhat, where Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi lost to BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by 23,182 votes in his first state assembly contest. Regional players AIUDF and Raijor Dal managed only two seats each. The election also saw a record 85.96% voter turnout, with strong participation from women voters. BJP’s campaign focused on welfare delivery, infrastructure, law and order, and issues such as illegal migration and citizenship.
